Satellite Fundamentals

The SBCA Satellite Fundamentals course is designed to provide technicians with an understanding of the basic knowledge and expectations they will need to successfully install and maintain a satellite system.  The program is designed to assess the skills and knowledge of a satellite technician.

At the conclusion of this course technicians should be able to:

  • Understand the basics of satellite technology, distribution, and installation
  • Have a knowledge in the importance of coax cable and connectors
  • Troubleshoot a DBS system
  • Explain the importance of grounding a satellite system

In order to maximize the benefits of this course it should be used in conjunction with a formal training curriculum.  This course has been used as a basis to develop low voltage licensing requirements in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Louisiana.

  Prerequisites:   Resources for basic education:
  • Ability to assemble and install a dish
  • Use a signal meter to peak a dish
  • Knowledge of the tools and materials necessary for dish installation and their operation
  • An understanding of basic safety requirements including working on a ladder near power lines
  • Internet sites
  • Information from manufacturers on proper use /operation of their equipment
  • Technical colleges that offer courses in basic electronics installation and maintenance
  Online Testing:
  • Cost: $99

  • Self-paced study
  • Test is 60 questions and timed for 90 mins
  • 3 total attempts allowed - no additional retakes will be provided
  • Successful completion will issue a certification number that is valid for 24 months

  Satellite Fundamentals Recertification

Extend your SBCA Certification for another 24 months by taking an online recertification test

  • You must have previously held a SBCA certification that has not been expired for more than 6 months to take the online recertification test.  If you are seeking SBCA certification for the first time, or your certification has been expired for over 6 months you must take the first time certification test.
  • If you hold multiple certification levels, you need only recertify the highest level certification as it supersedes the lower ones.  Example:  If you have both Satellite Fundamentals and MDU certifications expiring, you need only renew the MDU Certification
  • There will be questions on the exam that are not included in the guide.  Technicians are expected to know the answers to these questions and have been adhering to them

  • Test is 50 questions and timed for 60 mins
  • 3 total attempts allowed - no additional retakes will be provided
  • Test must be completed prior to 6 months past original certification expiration
  • If you have forgotten your certification number, it is not necessary to purchase the recertification test

    • SBCA staff verifies the information on all orders and will contact you if there is a problem with your order

Membership status is determined by whether the technician pays annual dues or is directly employed by a company that pays annual dues to the SBCA (the company name must be provided with the order form)
